Trinidad and Tobago represented at the International Crisis Communication and National Security Project
Eleven representatives from Trinidad and Tobago are currently in Washington D.C. representing the twin island in this year’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). This year’s project for Trinidad and Tobago, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, is entitled “Crisis Communication and National Security.”
Present at the event are Minister of Public Administration and Communication; Mr. Maxie Cuffie, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts; Ms. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Chief Immigration officer; Ms. Charmaine Gandhi Andrews, Assistant Commissioner of Police; Ms. Erla Harewood Christopher, Government Communication Consultant; Ms Irene Medina, Member of Parliament; Mr. Rushton Paray, Acting Assistant Superintendent; Mr. Michael Pierre, Chief Administrator, Tobago House of Assembly; Mr. Raye Sandy, Comptroller, Exercise and Customs Division; Mr. Glen Singh, Director of Tobago Emergency Management Agency; Mr. Allan Stewart and Minister in the Office of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs, Office of the Prime Minister; Mr. Stuart Young.
The group is expected to be in the United States for 8 days from March 4 to 11, 2017. The objectives of the project are to build capacity for Government of Trinidad and Tobago leaders to communicate effectively with each other and with the public in the event of a crisis, whether a natural disaster or terrorist attack; highlight strategic for public communication; examine crisis communication as it pertains to countering violent extremism.
The delegates will be in Washington, DC from the 4-8 of March to discuss: Messaging to counter extremism, Emergency Management, and Emergency Communication; they will then travel to Annapolis, Maryland to discuss Emergency Management at the state level; and finally to New York, New York to discuss Emergency management in a major world city.
Each year over 4,500 IVLP participant from all over the world is selected by U.S. embassies to travel to the United States to meet and confer with their professional counterparts. Visitors represent government, politics, the media, education, nongovernmental organizations, the arts, public health, international security, business and trade, and other fields.
